4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
4-H offers hundreds of different ways to learn and do new things. 4-H is the nation’s largest youth service organization. It helps young people develop and improve life skills such as self-confidence, leadership, citizenship and communications. Why should youth join 4-H? Through 4-H, you are exposed to fun and challenges that bring about education in numerous areas. With 4-H, you can: Have fun, make friends and go places!
4-H is a program that gives young people an advantage. It gives them the chance to learn new skills and build self-confidence. Students as young as Pre-K through high school participate in a variety of projects, which are subject areas that they are most interested in. They are encouraged to belong to a group or club. The program is delivered in a variety of levels and methods. Activities and other events challenge students to become more aware of their community and become active leaders.
4-H is a Federal program that is offered through the land-grant university system and the Cooperative Extension Service.
Decatur County 4-H programs that students may participate in:
Cloverbud program – for young people age Pre-K/Kindergarten through Second grade. They can choose up to 3 projects, complete activities that are in a work book and can exhibit one item from each of the projects chosen at the County Fair. Membership fee is $5.00 per year.
Traditional program – for students in 3rd – 12th grades. They select at least one subject or project from over 75 different options. They can exhibit items made or cared for at the County Fair. Many of the project winners can advance to the Indiana State Fair. Membership fee is $20.00 per year plus material supply expenses.
