Delaware County Master Gardener Association
The Delaware County Master Gardener Association is committed to the support of gardening and landscape beautification in Delaware County including the education and development of gardeners of all ages. While the Association’s economic resources are limited to profits from the activities supported by volunteers and its membership dues, an Appropriations Committee evaluates community requests for funding assistance on an annual basis.
Two categories of funding support are considered each year:
Requests of $500 or less.
These requests can be awarded following review of the Appropriations Committee. Requests for funds, however, should be made no later than September1 of each year for the following year.
Requests of $501 to $1,500.
These requests are awarded with approval of the Association’s full membership following Appropriation Committee and Board of Director recommendation. While application for assistance may be made at any time, Appropriation Committee review will depend on the availability of funds and the commitments already made. Funds are normally approved for the following year. Exceptions require approval of the Association membership following recommendation of the Appropriation Committee and the Board of Directors of the Delaware County Master Gardener Association.
Funds in this category are currently committed for 2012 for the construction of a cork tree for the new Orchid House for the Ball State University world class orchid collection and for 2013 with a trial plan approved by the membership for support of the Ball State University Department of Landscape Architecture in providing for the landscape design needs of a Delaware County organization. The deadline for application for landscape design assistance supported by the Delaware County Master Gardener Association is indicated in the application instructions provided in this section of this website.
Availability of Funds and Criteria for Award
The funding support for Appropriation Committee award or recommendation is dependent annually upon the financial success of the programs sponsored by the Delaware County Master Gardener Association. The amount of funds that can be made available for appropriation in support of community activities will be determined each year by the Association’s Finance Committee with approval of the Board of Officers and Directors during the normal budgeting process.
In order to provide guidance to members of the Appropriations Committee in evaluating funding requests, the following goals for the award of funds were established by the Board on April 5, 2012:
The Appropriations Committee of the Delaware County Master Gardener Association shall make decisions for funding based on a proposal’s ability:
· To build and enhance the reputation of the Delaware County Master Gardeners within Delaware County and the State of Indiana.
· To Achieve Community partnerships that provide Master Gardeners with service opportunity in addition to the provision of financial support.
· To contribute to the enrichment of Delaware County quality of life through beautification, improved gardening practices, and the development of gardeners of all ages.
These goals should be used as guidance to applicants requesting funding support in understanding the criteria upon which requests will be evaluated.
Applications for Funding Support of $500 or Less
Requests for support of educational endeavors and gardening projects in amounts from $50 to $500 can be considered. All requests should accomplish one or more of the goals established for funding support. The following educational endeavors are provided as examples:
· The research and study of plants, plant diseases, insect control and best Delaware County gardening practices.
· Educational programs designed to teach or improve gardening skills or appreciate the conservation of native plant species.
· Programs designed to enhance horticulture activities and development in Delaware County.
While applications can be considered as long as funds are available each year, organizations should submit requests by September 1 for activities planned the following year so that support can be considered and, if approved, requested in the next year's Appropriation Committee budget.

Application for Funding Support of More than $501
Since funding in this category is committed for 2012, all requests for 2013 should relate to a request for landscape design assistance. A commitment of $1,500 has been made to the Ball State University Department of Landscape Design to fund a Delaware County organization’s need for this service. The following information is provided to assist the application of Delaware County organizations with landscape design needs in applying for this support.
An Invitation to DELAWARE COUNTY ORGANIZATIONS to apply for Landscape Design Financial Assistance from the DELAWARE COUNTY MASTER GARDENER ASSOCIATION
The Delaware County Master Gardeners Association is pleased to provide funding that will allow the involvement of students in Ball State University’s nationally ranked program in Landscape Architecture in the preparation of Landscape Plans for the benefit of Delaware County.
Master Gardeners believe that a partnership with the Department of Landscape Architecture, and the organizations in Delaware County that are committed to increasing the beauty of the cities, towns, parks, rivers and entrances to the county, can result in long range improvement that will make our county one of the most beautiful Indiana counties in which to live and work or visit. This goal promises economic benefits to every city, town, organization and citizen in Delaware County.
The primary requirements for application for funding support allowing the preparation of a landscape design are as follows:
· A lack of funding resources for the development of a Landscape Plan.
· A clear commitment on the part of the organization requesting the landscape support for implementation of the plan and its maintenance.
Requests for Landscape Design assistance may include a request for the preparation of a publication that can be used for the development of grant funds or private donors for the implementation of Landscape Plans. Factors important for Delaware County Master Gardener Association support will include:
· Evidence of existing support including community groups committed to the implementation.
· Plans for recruitment of volunteers including strategies for development and supervision of volunteer Landscape Plan implementation groups.
· Evidence of research of potential grant and funding sources that will be approached with a completed Landscape Plan.
· Long range plans, strategies and commitment for maintenance.
ONLY ONE PROJECT CAN BE FUNDED ANNUALLY.
The contribution the Landscape Plan can make to Delaware County and the completeness of the request for funding support will be the determining factors in prioritizing applications by the Delaware County Master Gardeners.
The quality of the educational experience to be provided students in the development of the plan will be the determining factor by the faculty in the Department of Landscape Architecture for final selection of a project.
The deadline for receiving Delaware County applications requesting financial support for Landscape Design from the Delaware County Master Gardeners Association for the involvement of landscape architecture students during the year 2013 has been extended to March 1, 2013.
Notification of the intent to apply will be appreciated and allow assistance in the application process. Please contact mel Sharpe, Appropriations Committee Co-chair, at firstname.lastname@example.org for this notification and for assistance.
