Home, Yard and Garden

HOME, YARD & GARDEN

Gardening is a great activity that lots of people love to get into. It can range from just taking care of your lawn to landscaping and vegetable gardens. Gardening can even come indoors with houseplants. With this lots of questions usually are to follow and interesting situations.

Emerald Ash Borer Information
It was recently reported that there were confirmed hits of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) in Lake County. This insect ONLY affects ash trees, so all other species are safe. There are preventative treatments listed on this site that you can use to help your trees. If your tree is already affected, there are options to consider. If the tree's health has already started declining, it may be too late for treatment. Otherwise you can contact lawncare or tree services to see what additional treatments they can offer you. If you would like information in general about this insect, you can visit this website or call the Extension Office for more information.

Master Gardener Help Line for Horticulture
If you ever have something come up, please  call 755-3240 or email and either a Master Gardener or the Extension Educator, Nikky Witkowski, will try to help you to the best of his/her ability! If we don't know an answer, we will try to search for you to help find one or offer a location for further testing.

Really into Gardening? Or wanting to learn more, check out the Lake County Master Gardener Program!

Need to have your soil tested? Contact the Lake County Purdue Extension Office for the materials needed in order to send you soil off for testing. The materials are free and can be picked up in Crown Point or they can be mailed.
