Beef Newsletter

Beef Animal Location Form  Due February 28

Dear 4-H Beef Members and Parents,

Are your calves halter broke and ready for a ride to town?  You need to get your calendar marked and get the trailer lined up for Thursday, February 28.  The Beef ID will start at 4 - 6:30 pm in the Livestock Barn.   We will be setting up at 4:00 p.m. so the more folks we have there, the quicker we can be ready to start working calves.   The snow date has been set for the following Wednesday, March 6; same time, same location.

Changes, Changes!!!

¨ All Registered Heifers will need an RFID (Radio Frequency ID) tag from the State BOAH.  If you are in Beef Production you may request tags from the State Board of Animal Health (forms for getting tags can be obtained at the website below under Premise ID).  For all others plan to bring your heifer along for the ride and get your RFID on February 28.

¨ Blow and Go Show - Because of the extreme heat at last year’s fair it was decided to make the beef show a no groom show.  This change was liked by many and it was decided to go with the Blow and Go show again for the 2013 Beef Show.

What happens at Beef ID?

¨ Steers and Commercial heifers will be weighed and tagged.  We will be tagging with 2 different tags—one will be a RFID tag provided by the IN Board of Animal Health (BOAH) and a County specific tag.  If you have not applied for a Premise ID yet, you will need to apply prior to Beef ID.  Below is information on applying for your Premise ID.  The weighing process will allow the calves to compete in the rate of gain competition.

¨ Registered Heifers that will need a RFID tag can be brought to Beef ID.   If you only have Registered Heifers with RFID tags and will not be attending Beef ID, please call the office to let us know by noon on February 28.

¨ Registered and Commercial Heifers may be entered up to May 15.

If you have a conflict for Beef ID, please call 762-3231 by February 22.
The following are other important details you will want to note.
Please feel free to call Rich Crawford (762-2183) or me with any questions.

Sincerely,
