Natural Resources / Environment

NATURAL RESOURCES/ENVIRONMENT

Wells County is blessed with a wide variety of natural resources. The Wabash river courses through the middle of the county, from Vera Cruz along our eastern border, through Bluffton, and northwest, to Markle and the Huntington reservoir (Roush Lake.)

Woodlots dot the rural landscape, providing habitat for wildlife. Our county is also fortunate to be the home of one of Indiana’s State Parks:  Ouabache (pronounced “Wabash”.)

Depending on the issue, several local agencies are involved in the stewardship of our natural resources. Fortunately, these groups work together to accomplish common goals. Included in this list of organizations are: Purdue Extension Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Wells County Soil and Water Conservation District, Upper Wabash River Basin Commission, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Wells County Area Plan Commission, Wells County Health Department, and local government officials.
