Purdue Fencing Club

Saturday and Sunday Activities

The Purdue Fencing Club holds an activity called "Bunny Fencing" in which we allow children, with their parents'/guardians' permission, to participate in fencing. This activity gives the kids as well as other first-timers the chance to get a feel for the sport and be able to experience the fun in a safe way.  Kids wear fencing jacets and ties balloons to each side of their fencing mask.  They use their sabres to pop the balloons on their opponent's mask.

Bug Bowl: tent features "Insects as Food" and more - Entomology

Saturday and Sunday Activities

Bug Bowl: Come join the Department of Entomology for a variety of fun and exciting insect-related activities! Bug Bowl includes the Insect Art Contest (insect related art entries hung on the walls of Smith Hall) from children across the nation, the Insect Petting Zoo, the Running of the Roaches at Roachill Downs, an Arthropod Observation Station (come by this room with your insect questions and "Ask the Entomologist!”), Insect Crafts and Face Painting, and an Invasive Species Exhibit. Take a visit to the Roach Motel, delight your palate at the Insects as Food demonstration, get a little taste of honey at the Apiculture Exhibit and Honey Tasting Room, and check out the winners of the Insect Cake Decorating Contest. Survey a display of insects from around the world and pick up a free insect fossil while you check out the Fossil Exhibit, which includes fossils from the collections of the Indiana State Museum and regional private collections. Play insect games! See an amazing demonstration of bed bug sniffing dogs, and check out a presentation from the Science Theater Outreach Program, in the Insecta-class Yearbook. Join this insecta-cast of characters as they take a stroll down memory lane. And don’t miss the “the Bug Whisperer” Tony Gustin as he takes you into the bizarre and alien world of his creepy, crawly zoo!

Boiler Barnyard - Department of Animal Sciences

Saturday and Sunday Activities

Come to Boiler Barnyard to see live animals, presentations by leading professionals within the industry, sheep shearing demonstrations, and milk a dairy cow! Clubs will be present offering activities such as painting face masks, fish-bowl toss, holding a chick! Also, be sure to check out our individual scavenger hunt to win lots of cool prizes!

Departments of Agronomy and Botany & Plant Pathology

Saturday and Sunday Activities

Agronomy- Get slimed as you feel and learn about the texture of the soil and where you can find clay in your house.  Make a rainbow and get a tattoo as you learn about the water cycle.  Sample popcorn as you learn how popcorn pops.

Botany- Take home vegetables, herbs, and flowers from the Botany Club and Purdue Student Farm plant sales; Plant your own sunflower, cucumber, squash or tomato to take home; What's growing on my lettuce? An interactive activity; and come place your vote for the “Community Favorite” in the Third Annual Plant Art Competition.

Visit Lily Hall for a hands-on tidal pool with sea urchins, starfish, and sand dollars; observe chicken and sea urchin embryos; watch sea slugs, explore the behavior of mantis shrimp and weakly electric fish; and come for a chance to have an electrocardiogram.

Department of Agricultural & Biological Engineering

Saturday Activities only

Visit the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering tent and experience fun activities for all ages. Activities include: 

  • Tractor Display: A few tractors will be on display between the Ag and Biological Engineering and Food Science Building. Some are available for kid investigation. Bring your camera for this great photo opportunity! 
  • Pedal Tractor Racing: Three to four pedal (small tricycles that look like tractors) will be available for kids around ages 2-7. The track will be surrounded in straw bales. They can race or just ride for fun! 
  • The Agrability Tractor Lift: A lift is mounted onto a tractor for disabled operators to be placed from the ground into the cab of the tractor without having to climb. Kids will be able to sit in the chair and be lifted. This lift was created by a disabled farmer in Central Indiana. Other features to assist disabled operators are included on the tractor, such as extended levers and hand controls.
  • Smell and Guess: A fun game where participants are given a sheet with blanks to fill in by their labeled aroma. A great game to play together as a family! 
  • pH Exploration: Come test the pH of a variety of food and other materials you see everyday at home. See how much you know about acids and bases! 
  • Mini Hydraulic Excavators: Practice your backhoe skills by moving styrofoam peanuts into a bucket with ABE's mini hydraulic excavator. 
  • Free Balloons and Popcorn will be provided!  Come learn more about Agricultural and Biological Engineering!

Department of Agricultural Economics

Saturday Activities only

Visit the Department of Agricultural Economics tent to learn economics in a fun way and color a t-shirt! Play games and participate in hands-on activities to learn how people make decisions. Game and activities include: How much is that pet? bean bag toss, product and logo match game, race to "search" for energy sources, and color a "FREE" souvenir t-shirt!

Department of Forestry & Natural Resources

Saturday Activities only

  • Visit the FNR tent to experience live reptiles, amphibians and fish, courtesy of The Wildlife Society and American Fisheries Society. While at their booths, the little ones can learn about animals and try their hand at fishing.
  • Learn about tree identification and grafting from the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources.
  • Visitors can use their painting skills to decorate a rain barrel while leaning about stewardship from the Int’l Association for Society & Natural Resources.
  • Make a stop at the Forest Products building to discover why “Wood is Good” and watch the router in action. While in the Forestry Products building, purchase a cutting board, a unique conversation piece, from the Forest Products Society.
  • Want to try a new fish? Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant will be sampling smoked Asian carp – yes, I’m talking about the infamous bighead and silver carp that have been seen flying out of rivers and hitting unaware boaters.

Come see how gummy worms are made! See whether you can tell if color affects taste. Try to walk on our non-Newtonian pool - will you sink? What are those big words in the ingredients list on your favorite food?...ask a food scientist. What will happen when Dr. Applegate drops Mentos in Diet Coke? See for yourself and he'll explain why he made such a big mess.

The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine is participation in Spring Fest on Saturday, April 13th from 10AM to 4PM with events all around the Lynn Hall complex. Events include a live spay demonstration, equine treadmill demonstration, tours of the veterinary teaching hospital, a petting zoo, and many student displays throughout the College.

Brains, hearts, germs and bones - oh my! Touch a a real human brain and learn about the areas that relate to sensory and motor functions. Use a stethoscope to hear heart sounds. See germs that you didn't know were there. Find a bone and learn its function. Participants may also try their hand at "Operation". All this awaits you in Lynn Hall Room 2213 with first year medical students from the Indiana University School of Medicine - Lafayette (on the campus of Purdue University).

We like to get awareness and history out about the Grand Prix Foundation through displaying our Mobile Museum, as well as Tricycle Races, and Grand Prix Trivia along with other information points about Grand Prix.

Purdue Global Medical Brigades

Saturday and Sunday Activities

Come experience a mock medical brigade in Honduras where we set up temporary medical clinics to provide relief to rural villages! Help the doctor translate the patient's symptoms from Spanish to English and form a diagnosis. Learn how to take blood pressure. Lend a hand at the pharmacy and you could leave with some free candy. Get a taste of Honduras with freshly roasted coffee direct from Honduran coffee farms. One bag of coffee provides one meal for one child at the Sociedad Amigos de los Ninos orphanage. Don't forget your souvenirs! Make friendship bracelets with beads of all kinds of crazy colors. You don't want to miss out on this chance to become an official brigadier!

Saturday and Sunday Activities

The School of Nursing tent theme this year is “Growing into a Healthier You” and activities surround a wide range of health education and fun activities for the entire family. All ages can participate in hands on health-related activities. Free crafts and health information will be provided.

  • Learn about how you can “Grow a Healthy Heart.” Discover what could be contributing to your high blood pressure and have your blood pressure checked by Purdue nursing students while relaxing with us in our Garden.
  • “Stay Away Tooth Decay!” Come practice proper oral hygiene care on a larger than life model and receive supplies to help maintain your oral hygiene. With the Sun coming out, we all want to be showing off our Beautiful Smiles!
  • Discover how smoking may be affecting you or a loved one’s health. Identify things that they can do to help them quit. Practice breathing like a smoker and SEE what builds up in the lung and how long it takes.
  • “Sleep Tight and Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite” when you drop by and participate in pillow case decorating and story time, which are offered at certain times throughout the day to help children and parents identify healthy sleep habits.
  • Help us identify the differences between buddies and bullies as we work towards “Burying Bulling and Growing into Friends.” Parents there will also be great tools for you to identify possible effects of bullying happening to your child.
  • Join us as we learn to grow plants and nurture children’s positive mental health. We hope to see you there for handouts and tools to help children feel better about themselves.
  • With “Spring in Full Bloom” stop by and pick up handouts on Asthma and Allergies. Also, identify possible asthma and allergy irritants that may be inside your house or outside your house using our 3D model. While you’re there pick up some lotion samples to keep your skin smooth and healthy.
  • Parents bring your children to our Pediatrics Table for a developmental screening that will determine their BMI and growth and compare to the average.

There will be great opportunity for growth via the activities and beneficial information that will help you Spring into a Healthier You!

PULSe is the Purdue University Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Ph.D. program and our Science in Schools group consists of graduate student volunteers from the program. These volunteers go out to local elementary schools to teach kids about science through demonstrations and hands on experiments. On Sunday, April 14, you can come by our booth at spring fest to experience some of our activities first hand! Children and their parents can come and participate in some of our demonstrations and experiments that span areas of biology, chemistry, and even physics!   •  Fast Track is a weekly, 30-minute news program produced by students in the Brian Lamb School of Communication at Purdue University. Young visitors to the tent will be interviewed on TV by a student journalist. The recorded interview will be emailed home to the young person’s family and can be shared with friends and relatives.
  • Confucius Institute will provide hands-on activities to our attendees with a taste of Chinese art and language. Paper cutting, M&Ms with chopsticks and China-knot assembling, just to name a few, would give you a glimpse of Chinese folk handcrafts, and writing a dragon character with Chinese brush on rice paper definitely provides an authenticity of Chinese calligraphy.
  • The Interior Design program will give you a chance to participate in solving problems related to people's physical environment and interior spaces. Common activities designers deal with include space planning, furniture layout, material and finish selection, environmental awareness, and safety codes in buildings. You'll get a chance to design your dream kitchen, layout a restaurant, and help save people from a burning building!
  • The School of Languages and Cultures will have a variety of word searches, crosswords puzzles and word jumbles for you to enjoy.
  • Come leave your mark on the giant finger painting hosted by theArt History Student Organization.

Purdue Galleries and Purdue Department of Theatre

Saturday Activities Only

Purdue Galleries presents a hands-on activity on the Memorial Mall, in collaboration with Purdue Student National Art Education Association members and in conjunction with puppet shows and improv performances by Purdue Theatre. Participants will make contributions to the decoration of a large insect costume, which will be used to parade around the Memorial Mall several times throughout the day. The Robert L. Ringel Gallery in Stewart Center will feature "On Six Legs: 100 Years of Insect Art & Science," artworks from the Department of Entomology celebrating their centennial at Purdue University.

Come visit our tent and interact with various activities showcasing our ability to be relevant to industry needs, responsive to world issues and produce results that make a difference in our world.

Be sure to visit the Purdue Airport - Hangar 5 for the 6th annual Fly-in/Drive-in breakfast from 7:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Pharmacy Spring Fling is rolling out the red carpet with a day full of Hollywood themed games. All of the pharmacy student organizations will offer fun and educational games as well as prizes to attendees.  There will be  "game shows" as well as a DJ to play music for the Saturday event.
